Blockchain Platform to Fight Fake Educational Qualifications Developed by Fujitsu and Sony

Japanese international conglomerate Sony and IT instrumentality services firm Fujitsu have created an encrypted database for academic proficiency documents, The Asahi Shimbun reports on February. 26.

The info, that reportedly employs blockchain technology, is employed to stop forgeries of language proficiency documents, that some foreigners supposedly use to receive resident status to study in Japan.

Foreigners should submit a Japanese language proficiency certificate to the Immigration Bureau so as to receive resident status to study in Japan. Said certificates may be issued by Japanese academic institutions abroad. Japanese language colleges inside the country can submit the certificates on behalf of institutions overseas.

Illegal copies of the language certificates have reportedly been found in many different countries. The Asahi Shimbun states that students without proper language qualifications will face difficulties in their daily lives in Japan.

The two companies created the platform by combining Fujitsu’s on-line learning system with a blockchain developed by Sony subsidiary Sony world Education INC. In using the platform, Japanese language colleges will compare certificates with information registered on the blockchain so as to verify that the documents are authentic.

Sony and Fujitsu can supposedly take a look at the platform in March, before deploying for real-world use in April. The trial will happen at Human Academy Co., that runs Japanese language colleges within the cities of Osaka, Saga, and Tokyo.

Other universities and institutions of learning round the world are using blockchain technology to fight fake diplomas. Last week, the Maltese government proclaimed that every one academic certifications within the country, together with those from state, non-public and parochial colleges, are stored on a blockchain.

In January, Top Market Group reported that the University of Bahrain can issue diplomas on a blockchain. The university employs the Blockcerts open standard in a very partnership with Learning Machine, a startup that provides a blockchain-based system to issue and verify official records.
